Malta took over the role of the Chairpersonship-in-Office for 2024

Based on the decision of the OSCE Ministerial Council from Skopje, Malta assumed the role of the OSCE Chairpersonship-in-Office for the year 2024. At the special OSCE Permanent Council held on 25 January, the OSCE Chair, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta Ian Borg, presented the priorities of the OSCE Maltese Chairpersonship. Ukraine will remain on the top of the agenda of the OSCE. Safeguarding the OSCE’s functionality, including finding solutions for its leadership and adopting a unified budget, is another overarching priority of the Chairpersonship.

According to Minister Borg, Maltese engagement in this Organization and on the world stage will be governed by a spirit of principled engagement, bridge-building, and dedication to collaborative diplomacy. In his speech, Minister Borg further emphasized the need to protect the rules-based international system and pledged to protect and promote the principles and commitments of the OSCE in all 3 dimensions. He also presented priorities of the Chairpersonship in the respective areas:

In the first dimension: The Chairpersonship will build on Malta’s diplomacy as an elected member of the UN Security Council on the Women, Peace, and Security agenda. It will also renew the OSCE’s efforts to strengthen resilience against cyber threats, address transnational threats, and promote compliance with conventional arms control commitments.

In the second dimension: The Chairpersonship will inter alia pay particular attention to bridging digital divides and promoting wider access to digital technologies and skills. It has also pledged to pursue closer cooperation on climate resilience, adaptation, and mitigation, as well as on combating corruption and enhancing food security.

In the third dimension: At a time when media freedom is more under threat than ever before, initiatives on media literacy and the safety of journalists, particularly female journalists, both online and offline, will be put forward. The Chairpersonship will also actively engage in efforts to combat violence against women and trafficking in human beings.
