The Avalon Theatre will screen the film Brothers (Bratři) by director Tomáš Mašin on May 8, 2024, at 8 pm, as part of the continuing Lions of Czech Film Series, bringing top Czech films to the Washington, DC community. Based on a true story, Brothers tells one of the greatest stories of the Cold War, centering on resistance fighters and brothers Josef (Oskar Hes) and Ctirad Mašín (Jan Nedbal), who opposed communist-rule in 1950s Czechoslovakia.

ABOUT THE FILM

Brothers | Bratři

Dir. Tomáš Mašín, 135 min., Czech with English subtitles

In 1953, the Mašín family becomes the target of persecution in communist-ruled Czechoslovakia. The brothers believe that, following the example of their father, a hero of the anti-Nazi resistance, the only way to fight the oppression is with organized resistance. The brothers form an underground army that is responsible for a series of violent acts leading to an investigation by State Security Captain Koller (Stefan Konarske). The Mašín brothers become the most wanted men in the country. They attempt to escape to West Berlin to join the US army to liberate Czechoslovakia. Yet, Captain Koller has not given up and mobilizes a military operation, the size of which has not been seen since World War II. This results in one of the largest manhunts in modern history.

BROTHERS won the prestigious Czech Lion Award for Best Feature Film and represented the Czech Republic for the 2024 Oscars.
